Below are questions that we’re frequently asked by potential authors about working with us.

ABOUT THE PROPOSAL PROCESS

Q.1 What types of books do you publish?

We publish business and personal success books. Check out our list of topics that we publish to the right. If you think you have a business or personal success book in you, submit a proposal.

Q.2 What do you look for in a book proposal?

Check out our book proposal guidelines. You need to focus primarily on answering one question – why should we publish your book? Please answer the questions to the best of your ability to help us make the right decision. Also note that we don’t want a complete manuscript with your proposal at this time.

Q.3 Do I need an agent to be published by Maven House Press?

No. Although we have no problem in dealing with agents, there is no preference given one way or another as to how we’ll judge your submission.

Q.4 Can I submit my book to other publishers, too?

You are welcome to submit your manuscript to us and other publishers at the same time. We only ask that if your manuscript is accepted by another publisher, you let us know as soon as possible.

Q.5 How long does it take to review a submission?

Due to the number of proposals we receive, we are unable to reply to most of them. We will, however, review and consider every submission. If we decide to pursue your book idea you will receive a response from us in 4-6 weeks. So if you don’t hear from us assume that your book doesn’t fit what we’re looking for, and we wish you well in finding a publisher.

Q.6 What happens when my manuscript is accepted?

We’ll contact you by e-mail to let you know. And we’ll send you a book publishing agreement for your review. Once the contract is signed we’ll set up a phone conference to discuss what you can expect from us and what you’ll need to do next.

Q.7 Can I see a copy of your contract ahead of time?

Yes. We want to be known as a completely open business that you can trust, so we make our standard contract available to you to see before you even engage with us: download our standard book publishing agreement here.

ABOUT THE BOOK PUBLISHING PROCESS

Q.1 Will you edit my manuscript?

Yes. How much, of course, depends on the shape of the manuscript. We’ll certainly copyedit and proofread your manuscript to insure that there are no errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar and that the book adheres to Chicago Manual of Style guidelines. We may also engage in substantive editing, making suggestions to you (you can accept the suggestions or not) to add material if we think something is missing, to clarify points that we think should be clearer, to add a chart or graphic to help explain something, to move paragraphs or chapters around to improve the flow of information, etc. We believe, and we hope you do too, that the book that gets published is of the highest quality possible as well as useful to the reader and saleable in the marketplace.

Q.2 How many free copies of my book will I get?

We highly encourage our authors to promote their books, so we provide 50 free copies for them to distribute to their most important contacts. And we offer large discounts (50-75% depending on quantity) to authors who want to purchase more books for marketing or even for selling themselves, at speaking events, trade shows, or to their clients and customers.

Q.3 What marketing will you do for my book?

Book marketing is one of our strengths and something that differentiates us from many other publishers. We’ll actively market your book in as many channels as possible, including using distributors to bookstores worldwide, engaging in significant digital marketing, including using social media, websites, and e-newsletters, marketing directly to targeted audiences, providing publicity to media and industry contacts, and through other means. We’ll also work closely with you to help you market your book to your own networks. We’ll work closely with you to develop a personal marketing plan as well as provide you with promotional materials to use in your marketing.

Q.4 Will my book be available as an e-book (Kindle, Nook, iPad, etc.)?

Yes. All of our books will be available in both softcover and various e-book formats (.pdf, ePub, Kindle) that will work on most e-book readers.

Q.5 How long does it take you to publish a book?

We guarantee that we’ll publish your book within 12 months (it’s in our contract).

Q.6 Who holds the copyright to my book?

You do. We register the copyright with the United States Copyright Office and print the copyright in your name on the copyright page in the book.

Q.7 Will my book be available in my local bookstore?

Our books are distributed to bookstores and libraries by Ingram/PGW/Legato, one of the foremost distributors in the world. They have a large sales force that visits stores and libraries to try to sell our titles. But remember that individual bookstores and libraries decide what books they want to carry, so when you visit one let them know that you’re the author and that you’d like them to carry your book (they can purchase your book from whomever they usually buy books). You may even want to set up an author signing.
